New Season = New Toys?
Feb 15, 2015
Nearly half way through February already............but only 8 weeks until the weekend of The Masters Tournament, which some would say the start of the British Golf Season.
Some of you will be thinking of the new driver, new set of irons, wedges or putter to in a bid to revitalise your golf bag ready for your attack on the 2015 season. A lot of the new equipment out there right now is top drawer.
There is a lot of new equipment which has come onto the market in recent months, and some which is yet to surface. Regardless of your preference of manufacturer it is fair to say that your choice is wide and varied.
Yet despite the continual promise of more yardage with new technology, bare in mind that the average length from the tee for amateur golfers HAS NOT really changed since 1996! The R and A have measured average driving distance of golfers of all handicap levels each year since 1996.
They have found that between 1996 and 2012, the average length from the tee has only increased by 3 yards! So what has happened to the TEN plus yards which manufacturers promise with a new purchase.
Lee Westwood, probably Ping’s headline ambassador in Europe, has been trying and changing clubs for a few years now, but as recently as the end of 2014, was seen with a G10 driver back in his bag. Just goes to show, find the equipment that is right for you, NOT the one that manufacturers inform you is right for you!
So for those who feel that a change is not needed, of which there will be many, then I would highly recommend getting new grips on your clubs. I have lost count of the amount of golfers I see during lessons with shiny grips, or worse, grips with indentations where their fingers and thumbs have been.
Both of which, will have a profoundly detrimental impact on your golfing performance.
It goes without saying that if you can't hold onto the golf club properly, it becomes very difficult to control the clubhead, and if you can't control the clubhead it becomes very difficult to hit the shots that you want to during your round.
Every golfer will have a preference on the type of grip that they use. Whether you prefer the firmness of a corded grip or something a little softer, the most important thing in a grip is comfort. If it doesn't feel comfortable in your hands, then you are not giving yourself the maximum chance to control the clubhead.
Grip thickness should be another aspect that you should consider. There a lot of golfers out there who are using the wrong sized grip, which can affect the comfort, and ultimately the 'balance' of the body throughout the swing. An under sized grip can result in too much forearm tension, which can detrimentally affect how the body works throughout the swing.
So to make your clubs feel like brand new for the 2015 season, get yourself some new grips, and more importantly get the right size of grips!
